Journey to the Center of a Golfball

Ever wonder what's inside a golfball?

At my job preparing physics demos, I had to drill into almost 200 assorted golfballs, so that the students in large astronomy lectures could stick the balls on the end of pencils and observe the phases of the moon.

What amazed me was that, although all the golfballs were white on the outside, there was no telling what color the inside might be. The other surprise was that after about 10 minutes of drilling merrily away, I was lowering the drill press into a golfball when I was suddenly sprayed in the eyes and face with a pressurized yellowish fluid. About 10% of the balls were liquid-filled, and though I still have no idea what the liquid was, my eyes remain undamaged after about two months... as far as I can tell.

With the next images, I really wish I could take the focus and lighting of the one on the left and combine it with the composition of the one on the right. Unfortunately, the shavings have been swept away by now.
